Hendre himself is the author of a number of books advocating the idea of ‘India for Hindus’, which are full of references to Muslim or Christian ‘anti- Hindu conspiracies’ and are not free of anti-Semitic rhetoric either. Anti- Jewish remarks appear in the captions to one of Hendre’s cartoons directed against the government of Indira Gandhi, which he often describes in his writings as anti-Hindu. One of the captions says: ‘Mrs. Gandhi, a widow of a Parsi, pretends to be Hindu but is doing everything as commanded by Muslims, Christians, Jews and Parsis to destroy Hindu India’ (Hendre 1974: 8). The caption for another cartoon aimed against the plan to construct ‘the New Bombay City’ calls the whole project ‘a great Jewish Communist plot against Hindus’, according to which the Government of Maharashtra allegedly impoverished a number of people by acquiring their lands at low prices, with the aim of converting this predominantly Hindu region into a ‘non-Hindu dominated city’ (Hendre 1974: 9). Elsewhere, writing about the Parsis, whom he accuses of lack of loyalty towards Hindus and alliance with Muslims and Christians, Hendre notes: ‘There are reasons to believe that the Parsis are Jews. Even if they are not Jews, their grip of Indian economy and socio-political institutions has been motivated by the spirit of financial hegemony in India’ (Hendre 1975: 227).

Both Maharaj and Hendre appear to defend pro-communalist Hindu ideas and attack the policy of secularisation and it is in this context that Jewish topics appear in their writings. Maharaj seems to view the Jews as ‘the source of all evil’ and constructs a Hindu–Jewish dichotomy. The conspiracy is described as triangular, however, the Jews are portrayed as the primary and the most important element of this triangle. Christians and Muslims are associated with the Jews, though portrayed as their instruments. The friends of the Hindus are vaguely defined. They are referred to as other victims of Jews/Zionists: ‘common people’ in general manipulated by the ‘Jewish’ mass media, Asians and Africans suffering from ‘Anglo-American racist imperialism’ and subjected to Christian missionaries. Thus the author applies Western mythologies about the Jewish conspiracy to explain what the origins of the enemies of Hindus are. On the one hand, the former are the main ‘oppressors’ of the Hindus, Muslims and Christians, i.e. those from whom Hindus ‘suffer’ in their everyday life. On the other hand, they themselves are no more than instruments in the hands of the Jews, or of the great powers which, according to Maharaj, are also controlled by the Jews.
